PyroBreak EX-2 Technical Data Sheet

PyroBreak EX2 is a water based flame retardant system containing a wetting agent designed to increase the rate and depth at which the fire retardant will penetrate paper, paperboard, wood, and fabric substrates. The flame retardant saturant works by reducing the threshold ignition temperature and completely dehydrating the cellulose fibers. This alters the decomposition favoring the formation of non-flammable char and significantly reducing the formation of combustible tars.

Appearance

  1. Clear liquid. Strong, sweet odor.
  2. Dries clear and odorless on paper, paperboard, wood, and fabric.

Typical Properties

Weight/gallon: 10.6 ± 0.2 lbs.
Viscosity: <10 centipoise
pH: 7.5 ± 0.2
Solids: 49 ± 1.0%

Applications

PyroBreak EX2 may be applied by spray, dip, brush, soaking, or in the papermaking process, at the size press. PyroBreak EX2 will impart flame retardancy to most paper, paperboard, and natural fibers. It will also impart flame retardancy to most wood products provided wood can be penetrated to a sufficient depth.

PyroBreak EX2, when penetrated into paper or wood, keeps the natural color of the substrate. PyroBreak EX2 leaves no white haze when dried and fully penetrated into the surface. To seal PyroBreak EX2 into the paper or wood and give the surface water resistance, it is recommended that FRC-EX5 water resistant polymer be applied over the PyroBreak EX2. Two coats of FRC-EX5 are recommended.

NOTE: While PyroBreak EX2 functions extremely well on many materials, it does not provide
flame retardancy to every substrate. The buyer accepts liability for determining whether the
product is suitable for the buyer's intended use.

Packaging

The product is available in 5-gallon pails or 55-gallon drums.
It should not be repackaged or diluted without consulting FRC Technologies.

Storage

PyroBreak EX2 should be stored at temperatures above freezing and below 100 F. Should the product freeze, it can be reconstituted by warming gently to 75 F with mixing. At temperatures above 90 F there may be a slight amount of ammonia gas released. Care should be taken when opening drums as there may be a slight pressure build up.

Handling and Use

Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles to avoid potential skin or eye irritation when applying the product. While PyroBreak EX2 is considered non-hazardous, the product may cause skin irritation in certain individuals.

The product should be stirred before application. Some applications may require dilution with water. Check with the manufacturer for instructions. The product contains a low-foaming wetting agent so the use of a defoamer is not required and should be avoided as it may reduce wettability.

Before applying PyroBreak EX2, the substrate should be clean and checked for penetration. Poor penetration usually results in poor flame retardancy. Paper and paperboard require between 12% to 18% (dry weight) PyroBreak EX2 to achieve low flame spread values. The amount of PyroBreak EX2 applied to wood will depend on the species and flame spread test required.

PyroBreak EX2 is completely water soluble and, therefore, the application equipment and spills may be cleaned with water.

Safety and First Aid

PyroBreak EX2 contains no solvents, toxic or hazardous chemical components. The following procedures should be followed when using the product:

  1. Use rubber gloves and safety goggles when handling the product. If product is sprayed, a paint spray dust mask should be used.
  2. Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes if product contacts them. If irritation continues, seek medical attention.
  3. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. If irritation occurs, seek medical attention.
  4. Induce vomiting and seek medical attention if product is swallowed.
