PyroBreak EX-11 Technical Data Sheet

PyroBreak EX11 is a water solution of a flame retardant and wetting agent. The wetting agent increases the rate and depth of penetration of the flame retardant into various substrate such as paper, paperboard, wood, and cotton. The flame retardant works by reducing the threshold ignition temperature and completely dehydrating the cellulose fibers. This alters the decomposition favoring the formation of non-flammable char and significantly reducing the formation of combustible tars.

Appearance

  1. Clear liquid. Sweet odor.
  2. Dries clear and odorless.

Typical Properties

Weight/gallon: 9.15 lbs.
Brookfield viscosity: < 5 cps
pH: 6.0 ± 0.1
Solids: 18.5% ± 0.5%

Applications

PyroBreak EX11 may be applied by spray, dip, or brush. PyroBreak EX11 will impart flame retardancy to most cellulosic substrate such as paper, paperboard, wood, or cotton. Application to wood may require prolonged soaking or pressure treatment to achieve the depth of penetration required to achieve maximum flame retardancy.

PyroBreak EX11 will leave no haze or surface residue when fully penetrated into the substrate. To prevent PyroBreak EX11 from being leached from the treated material, it is necessary to seal in the flame retardant using a water resistant polymer coating such as FRC-EX5. Two coats of FRC-EX5 are recommended.

NOTE: While PyroBreak EX11 functions extremely well on many materials, it does not provide flame retardancy to every cellulosic substrate. The buyer accepts liability for determining whether the product is suitable for the buyer's intended use.

Packaging

PyroBreak EX11 is available in 5-gallon pails, 55-gallon drums, or bulk (minimum bulk shipment 3,500 gallons). It should not be repackaged or diluted without consulting PyroTech.

Storage

PyroBreak EX11 should be stored at temperatures above freezing and below 120° F. Should the product freeze, it may be reconstituted by warming gently to 75° F with mixing. At temperatures above 120° F there may be a slight amount of ammonia gas released.

Handling and Use

Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles to avoid potential skin or eye irritation when applying. While PyroBreak EX11 is considered non- hazardous, the product may cause skin irritation in certain individuals.

The product should be stirred before application. The product may be diluted with water; check with the manufacturer for specific instructions. The product contains a low-foaming wetting agent so the use of a defoamer is not recommended and should be avoided as it may reduce wettability.

Before applying PyroBreak EX11, the substrate should be clean. It is important to check the surface of the material to be treated first with a few drops of PyroBreak EX11 to make sure it will penetrate. Poor penetration usually results in poor flame retardancy.

Safety and First Aid

PyroBreak EX11 contains no solvents or hazardous components. The following procedures should be followed when using the product:

  1. Use proper breathing apparatus to protect from misting when spray applying.
  2. Use rubber gloves and eye protection when handling the product.
  3. Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes if product contacts them. If irritation continues, seek medical attention.
  4. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. If skin irritation occurs, seek medical attention.
  5. Induce vomiting and seek medical attention if product is swallowed.
